Award Alert: Qatar Airways Qsuites For 4

Hello from Dubai!

I’m spending a week or so out in Dubai to celebrate my birthday. No one paid attention on November 3 for some odd reason – was something big happening that day? – so I decided to do something fun for myself. ūüôā

Since I’ve been in Dubai, Pfizer released some positive results of its COVID-19 vaccine. With that announcement, there seems to be a little more hope for travel in 2021. Naturally, I figured this would be the perfect time to send an Award Alert so y’all can be ready to go!

Qsuites seems like a great booking to celebrate so I dug up award space for 4 people from several airports across the U.S. – there’s even space for 4 from the west coast!

So, if you’re in the mood for a trip to India, the Maldives, Oman, Seychelles, South Africa, or some other fun destination, this one is for you!

You can check out¬†my review of Qsuites on Instagram. If you’re new here, I’m most active on IG so¬†it’s a good idea to follow me there.

Now, let’s get into it!

Qsuites has been getting great reviews for 3+ years thanks to its innovative seat design. Personally, I loved my Qsuites flight from the champagne to the great food to the amazing service.

While it can often be difficult to find much space out of JFK and LAX, I was really happy to see space for both. In fact, you can even find space for 4 people out of LAX. You’ll even find two flights out of JFK with space on some dates.

I’m also excited that Qatar Airways has is launching a flight from SFO and there’s a solid amount of award space for 4 people on the outbound!

The return space isn’t quite as good so you might have to book the return flight to a different airport depending on travel dates but there’s still space.

Now, let’s take a look at the dates you can book.

Best Ways To Book

My guess is that most of you aren’t really interested in paying $600+ per person in taxes/fees thanks to surcharges that Cathay and British Airways will require.

Personally, I’m a fan of 70,000 miles to the Middle East/Indian Subcontinent (including the Maldives and Seychelles) and 75,000 miles to Africa is easily the best option – esp. when you consider that you avoid surcharges.

Your next best option is Asia Miles at 75,000 (or 90,000 miles) to Doha. If you plan to continue on from Doha, expect to need 90,000 miles regardless of your departure airport. The surcharges hurt but it’s easy to get your hands on Asia Miles.

Keep in mind that Asia Miles has a¬†few distance-based charts. One for awards on only Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon — let’s call this the standard chart and another for awards on multiple Oneworld carriers.

However, if you only include one Oneworld carrier, you can add 5,000 miles to the standard chart rate. If you include a connection on American (or another Oneworld partner) on this booking, the award will be governed by the Oneworld multi-carrier chart.

If you’re booking a one-way award, I’m not a fan of this chart. However, if you’re booking a round-trip ticket, you might be able to get a better rate than only including flights on Qatar Airways.

Lastly, British Airways requires 108,250 Avios for a non-stop from the east coast and over 150,000 Avios from the central U.S. and west coast. Gross. The surcharges just add insult to injury.

Chase Ultimate Rewards is currently running a 30% transfer bonus to British Airways which makes this slightly more palatable from the east coast but it’s still not great. Remember, BA’s distance-based award chart charges per segment so connections within the US or abroad will increase the cost.

How To Book

Let’s start with American as I think that will be the most popular option.

  1. Search the long-haul segment to DOH with American Airlines to confirm Qsuites space
    • If you want to add connections, search from/to those cities after you’ve confirmed the long-haul segment
  2. If transferring Marriott points to American, put the award on hold then transfer points immediately
    • You can hold awards online
  3. Complete the booking

Booking with Asia Miles isn’t quite as straightforward. If you are booking a non-stop:

  1. Search on the Asia Miles site
    • If your travel dates are flexible, search with American¬†first so you can see a calendar of date options
  2. Enter the desired date of travel
  3. Find Qatar Airways space Рyou may also see British Airways or Cathay space
  4. Transfer Amex, Capital One, Citi points — can take a couple of days to process
  5. Select the flight you want
  6. Complete the booking

If your award will include a connection on American, you’ll have to call to book. In this case, you can follow the same steps but you’ll want to search with British Airways for the AA segment. Once you’ve found award space, you can call Asia Miles (1-866-892-2598) to complete the booking.

Booking with British Airways is as simple as running a search and booking online.

Bottom Line

Personally, I would look at using American miles for this one. However, I know some of you don’t have access to American miles anymore. In that case, Asia Miles would be my first choice as you can book up to 360 days from departure and they’re so easy to earn.

Happy booking!
